Frequently asked questions.
What is FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)?
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global nonprofit organization that runs inclusive, team-based robotics programs for ages 4-18. FRC specifically combines the excitement of sport with the rigor of science and technology, challenging high school students to build industrial-sized robots, fundraise, create a team identity, and promote STEM in their community.
What is the mission and vision of Team 7657 Thunderbots?
Our mission is to provide hands-on learning experiences through a team committed to growth and progress, with the exciting goal of building a robot that wins the world championship. Our vision is to build a strong foundation of humble, passionate individuals who will ensure the FRC program continues for future student success.
Our mission statement is: “We exist to provide hands-on learning experiences through a team committed to growth and progress. And if we build a robot that wins the world championship, that’s cool too.”
What are the core values that guide the team?
The Thunderbots are guided by core values of Passion, Adaptability, Reliability, and Teamwork. We also emphasize Gracious Professionalism®, which means competing fiercely while treating everyone with respect and kindness, fostering a welcoming environment, and blending knowledge, pride, and empathy.
How does the team ensure student safety?
Student safety is our top priority. All participants must adhere to the FIRST Youth Protection Program (YPP) guidelines, as well as NTI and EVSC rules. Specific safety protocols include mandatory safety glasses and closed-toe/heel shoes in designated areas, adult supervision for power tools, no horseplay, and clean work areas. We also require an online Student Onboarding Form to collect emergency contact and medical information.
How does the team communicate with students and parents?
Our primary communication platform is Slack for members and mentors. We also utilize Google Workspace for document storage, email, and calendars. Parents are encouraged to subscribe to our Google Workspace calendars for event schedules, team meetings, and season project management. To communicate with parents, we send messages through Remind.
Are travel expenses for competitions covered?
Once a student’s dues are paid, all transportation, hotel, and meal expenses for team travel to district competitions are covered using the team's funds. Travel itineraries are provided at least one week before each event.
If we qualify for the World Championship in Houston, additional fundraising will be needed.
What are the financial obligations for students?
For the 2024-2025 school year, team dues are $350 per student. These dues help cover team expenses, with the average yearly cost per student being $1,200. Dues are payable to NTI by the end of the first week of October, with "Robotics Dues" in the memo. The team also actively seeks grants and sponsorships to support its operations.
How can parents get involved with the Thunderbots?
Parental participation is highly encouraged, though not required. Parents can volunteer as mentors, provide meals for the team, take photos and videos, help transport team equipment, assist with event judging or field assembly, or make donations of supplies, materials, food, beverages, or tools.
Why is a Photography and Copyright Consent Form required?
This form is essential for team publicity, allowing us to use student images in photos and videos for our website, brochures, and other media. We are careful to protect student identity by only using their first name and first letter of their last name in publicly displayed media.
